The curious buchette del vino—"wine holes"—carved out of Renaissance facades around Tuscany once enabled merchants to sell their wine directly to passersby. This year, buchetta enthusiasts discovered the portals could also provide a safe, socially distant way to serve wine during an epidemic outbreak—and that Florentines, somehow, knew it 400 years ago.

"It is a joy to see the curious looks on their faces of discovering something that has always surrounded them, but they didn't really know much about," said the château owner.
