St. Helena's ChΓ’teau Boswell has burned and Meadowood Resort is among the evacuated properties in the heart of Napa Valley; full extent of lost Cabernet crop remains unknown "Brutal" and "relentless" were the words one California winemaker used after receiving evacuation alerts early Sunday morning. The Glass fire, which ignited Sept. 27 just before 4 a.m., quickly spread to the eastern foothills between Calistoga and St. Helena in the heart of Napa Valley and had grown to 2,500 acres by Sunday night, with 0 percent containment. Two other fires started Sunday night on the west side of Napa Valley, near Spring Mountain.
St. Helena's ChΓ’teau Boswell has fallen victim to the Glass fire. Photos show the winery, which is just across the Silverado Trail from Rombauer winery and a mile north of Duckhorn, engulfed in flames.
The fast-moving fire triggered evacuations east of the Silverado Trail, including a local hospital, Meadowood Resort, Calistoga Ranch and multiple wineries and vineyards. "It burned right up to the tasting room doors," Mending Wall co-owner and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown told Wine Spectator. He said that there were still 10 tons of grapes hanging on the estate's vines in the northeast corner of the St. Helena appellation, all of which will now be lost. "We will definitely be putting it on the ground," he lamented.
The Boysen and Shady fires prompted evacuations west of Highway 29 and north of St. Helena, into Sonoma County. Reminiscent of 2017, winds were driving the flames toward the town of Santa Rosa, threatening the homes of thousands.
