Vineyards and wineries have avoided serious fire and smoke damage so far, but danger remains for Willamette and Rogue valleys Oregon and Washington are battling a wave of wildfires this week, joining still-smoldering California as much of the West Coast has been blanketed with smoke from multiple blazes, blotting out the sun. The flames have largely spared Oregon wine regions, but vintners remain anxious about the nearby fires.
According to Oregon's Office of Emergency Management, 33 fires were burning as of last night, covering a total of 924,000 acres so far. Oregon officials also confirmed the deaths of three people.
Wineries in the Willamette Valley, including Ponzi and Adelsheim, were briefly evacuated, but no wineries or vineyards have been damaged, according to veteran winemaker Rollin Soles. Fires have also threatened southern Oregon's Rogue Valley, and in Washington, the Evans Canyon fire has burned more than 75,000 acres in the foothills of the Cascades, northwest of Yakima.
