21st Century Digital The Monteferrarios' glass cellar was inspired by the couple's visits to Las Vegas. Today's wine collectors are incorporating wine storage into their homes in dramatic ways, combining state-of-the-art technology with forward design. New Jersey collectors Jacqueline and Greg Monteferrario share details of their 1,800-bottle cellar, which focuses on California Cabernet greats such as large-format bottles of Harlan Estate. Three other sets of collectors, including Montreal's Pierre-Luc and Vanessa Charlebois, take us inside their breathtaking wine sanctuaries for "The Art of the Cellar" cover story in Wine Spectator's Sept. 30 issue, on newsstands now. COLLECTIBLES 96 points • $230 • 315 cases made, 40 cases imported This is a contrast of power and refinement, with black cherry and black currant fruit encased in a sheen of oak, while burly tannins and vivid acidity enhance the structure. Awkward today, this displays incredible elegance, with a laser of vivid acidity driving the exceptional length. Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera. Best from 2023 through 2043. From Italy.—Bruce Sanderson

Ask Wine Spectator Q: Does a magnum have a longer drinking window than a standard-size wine bottle?—Kevin, Alexandria, Va. A: "Drink windows"—our recommendations for when a wine will taste its best—are intended for wine in a standard-size bottle. Conventional wisdom holds that because large-format bottles like magnums have a higher ratio of wine volume to ullage (the small amount of air inside the bottle), the wine inside the bottle ages at a slower pace than that of a standard 750ml bottle. But there's also no scientific evidence to back that up. It's just something to keep it in mind when you're deciding when to open a large-format bottle of wine.—MaryAnn Worobiec Have a question about collecting? E-mail us. Courtesy Phifer Pavitt The winery still stands at Phifer Pavitt, but the estate vineyard is a loss. Some vintners in Calistoga, Spring Mountain and Howell Mountain have been able to inspect the Glass fire's damage, but the blazes continue as they try to salvage harvest. As of Thursday night, the fire, which ignited Sept. 27, has consumed more than 60,100 acres, damaging homes, wineries and other businesses, including two of Napa Valley's most prestigious luxury resorts, Meadowood and Calistoga Ranch. A few vintners have managed to return to their properties, but worry hangs in the air. "It's very difficult for us to process all this right now," Mike Davis of Calistoga's Davis Estates said.
